Rocktober pie served up for sports fans

Fat Guy Corner

The sports world is rocking October with baseball playoffs, NHL hockey, college football, NFL action, and now the NBA season fires up this week! Man, for people like me, this is a slice of pumpkin pie and a tub of whipped cream! What shall we dive into first? The pie was first, so let’s get into the world of sports.

The NBA season started Tuesday night, but our Detroit Pistons took the court Wednesday at home against the Brooklyn Nets.

What do we expect from the Pistons this season? The new coach will be Dwane Casey, who was fired by the Toronto Raptors for basically choking in the playoffs! I will personally miss Stan Van Gundy.

The roster will feature Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin as the floor leaders of the Pistons. Blake will need to carry this Pistons’ team on his back if they are to make playoff noise. The Pistons won 39 games last season and I pencil them in for about the same this season. I think Stanley Johnson needs to step up, as does Luke Kennard, who will be in his second year as a Piston. Let me watch a few games and then express my thoughts on this hoop team.

Wrong-footed Wings stumbling

The Red Wings are bumbling and stumbling like a bad figure skater so far this season. The Red Wings are 0-3-2 and have yet to record a victory as of this column. I have yet to catch a game to watch them, so my opinion has yet to be formulated. I can say an 8-2 white washing the other night by the Boston Bruins is not the most optimistic score I have ever seen. Detroit did take the ice Monday against the Montreal Canadiens, so maybe a win can be achieved tonight. Editor’s note: Nope. They lost 7-3 after the Fat Guy’s column was filed.

MLB playoffs all knotted up

The MLB playoffs are currently all knotted up at 1-1 in both the National League and American League. The Houston Astros will end up winning this series from the Red Sox. I think the pitching favors the Houston team over the seven-game series. The hitting by both clubs I rate as equal. The series shifts to Houston, so let’s enjoy this series as it plays out.

The National League series shifts out West and I am pulling for the Brewers to win, but my large gut feeling is the Dodgers will find a way to win. What I am saying is the World Series will be a rematch of the L.A. Dodgers and the Houston Astros in round two!! Could it be that Justin Verlander wins two World Series rings as a Houston Astro? It’s possible, for sure! Repeat this: I love October baseball!

Must-win for Motor City Kitties

The Detroit Lions grabbed the victory over the bye week last week, except it does not count in the standings. The Miami Dolphins, fresh off a victory over the Chicago Bears, will host the Lions Sunday in Miami. This is a must-win for Detroit, as the Miami Dolphins are a team Detroit can beat on the road. I know the Dolphins are 4-2, but it’s a weak 4-2, if you ask me. The Lions’ division is all bunched up and Detroit can launch itself into the thick of the division race with a win. What will the silly and unpredictable Lions do this Sunday? The Fat Guy cheeseball prediction is a bold one: Kitty Kitty 23 and Wrapped Fish In Newspaper 20. Oh, man, I can’t believe I predicted a Lions’ win!

High noon showdown

The Michigan and Michigan State game is at high noon in East Lansing Saturday. What a football game this will be with Michigan, fresh off a fresh whipping of Wisconsin and Sparty, with a huge last-second road win at Penn State. The Spartans have owned the Wolverines, winning eight of the last 10 games. Who will win this year’s Paul Bunyan Trophy? I will withhold a prediction and comment on the game next week. It will be a mustwatch game for Mitten State bragging rights and divided households all over the State of Michigan! Go Green and White and Go Blue, depending on the school you root for!

The NFL picks are next. I was red-hot last week once again
