Police: 90-year-old leaves scene after hitting Amish buggy

MARLETTE TWP. — A 90-year-old woman struck a horse-drawn buggy on Dec. 16 and continued home after failing to find what caused the damage.

The Marlette Police Dept. reported Michigan State Police in Caro investigated the accident that occurred around 2:35 p.m. on Marlette Road near Boyne Road.

Troopers said the buggy separated from its wheels after impact, causing the horse to tumble off the roadway. The horse then got up and ran down the roadway, pulling the buggy’s frame behind it.

The driver of the buggy sustained minor injuries but refused treatment.

Police determined from debris left at the scene that the vehicle which hit the buggy was a red 2006-09 Ford Fusion with front passenger-side damage.

“On Dec. 17, the suspect called their insurance company to make a claim,” according to a Michigan State Police press release. “The suspect was advised to call the police to make a police report.”

A call was also made to Sanilac County Central Dispatch by the employee to notify that the woman had said she hit something that Monday afternoon.

A visit to the suspect’s residence found the car matched the parts recovered at the scene. She told police she stopped after striking something but continued home after not finding what caused the damage.

The Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case.
