No charges following police car, bike accident

BROWN CITY — No charges will be filed against the Brown City police officer whose patrol car struck a 16-year-old bicyclist while en route to an emergency call earlier this year.

City manager Clint Holmes said the city received a copy of the Michigan State Police report of the May 31 accident on Sept. 6.

Holmes told the Brown City Council at its meeting Monday (Sept. 9) that the conclusion of the half-inch thick report was cyclist error.

“This crash is the direct result of the cyclist disregarding the traffic control device on Reed Street and failing to yield the right-of-way to the eastbound Ford,” the report stated. “Prosecutor James Young reviewed this complaint and advised no charges would be issued as the (cyclist) was determined to be at fault in the crash.”

Michigan State Police in Caro originally reported that Brown City Police Officer Adam Stracenrider, a 10-year veteran of the police department, was responding to a call in emergency mode around 9:45 p.m. on May 31 when the accident occurred.

State police reported Stracenrider was heading eastbound on Main Street in response to a call of a suicidal person who had a knife. The bicyclist attempted to cross the street northbound at Reed Street and was struck by the patrol car.

The male Brown City teen sustained serious injuries and was flown by LifeNet to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he was treated and released. Stracenrider was not injured in the crash.

Holmes plans to forward a copy of the bill for the new patrol car windshield to the insurance company.
