Cold doesn’t stop food distribution in Melvin

MELVIN — Nearly 30 volunteers braved the cold temperatures in the single digits to distribute food to Sanilac County families in need Feb 8. in Melvin. The distribution of more than 58,000 pounds of meat, canned goods and staples was sponsored by Marlette Heaven Sent Community Ministries and hosted by Melvin United Methodist Church. Some 900 families were served in the largest distribution to date.

Referred to as the “Melvin Methodist Mission of Meals,” the event is held in Melvin every second Saturday of the month starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until the food is gone. Cars line up around the block to receive food in a “drivethru” style food pantry. Volunteers arrive early at 8 a.m. to unload the semi load of food from the Eastern Michigan Food Bank.

“We are thankful to our volunteers from the surrounding communities who lend a hand in making sure those less fortunate are served. It really takes a lot of pressure off people who can reduce their food purchase and use the money saved to buy heat or pay for other needs,” said Gina Titus, executive director of Heaven Sent. “We are so grateful to all who give their time or donate financially to this important project. More help is always appreciated.”

Marlette also hosts a similar food distribution on the last Saturday of each month to help Sanilac County families stretch their food budget. “Every little bit helps,” said Titus. The Marlette event is held in the parking lot of the Marlette Baptist Church and volunteers are welcome to join in.

For more information on serving or donating to these food distributions, contact Heaven Sent Ministries at 989-635-8164 or by mail at PO Box 384, Marlette, MI 48453. Through this non-profit agency, every dollar donated will purchase from the Eastern Michcigan Food Bank the equivalent of $14 of food from a grocery store.
