PECK
— This particular basketball game between Peck and Memphis was much more than just a game. It was more than just Peck trying to knock the league leading Yellowjackets out of first place. The Peck basketball program donated $1 from every admission to the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser and the team took donations at the door from participants before the game. Both teams also sported specially made T-shirts for the event.

The Lady Pirates played inspired basketball from the beginning, jumping out to an 11-9 first quarter lead. The second quarter was a whole different story as the NCTL leaders used a 20-9 advantage to take a 29-20 lead in half-time.

The second half did not get any better for Peck as Memphis outscored them 20- 8 en route to a 49-28 victory for the Yellowjackets. Nicole Pries and Karen Jones led the way with seven points, while Shayna Bedy added six.

Last Thursday, the Lady Pirates let a close game get away in the fourth quarter, losing 59-44 to North Huron. Peck was down early as they trailed 16-8 after the first quarter. They cut the lead to 28-22 entering half-time.

The Lady Pirates played inspired defense in the third quarter yielding only seven points. However, Peck only scored 10 points themselves. The fourth quarter was a different story as North Huron went off for 24 points. “Our fourth quarter hurt the most with only scoring three baskets from the floor and allowing them eight from the floor,” said Peck coach Carrie Robinet.

Nicole Pries led the team with 16 points while Karen Jones added 11 and Kelsey Schell chipped in six points and seven rebounds.

The Peck boys team hosted Port Hope last Friday and raised money for the foundation as well. The Lady Pirates host Kingston tonight and travel to Owen-Gage on Thursday.

BROWN CITY

The Lady Green Devils stayed a game back of league-leading Sandusky and left little doubt in anyone’s mind who the better team was last Tuesday in its GTCEast contest with Ubly, racing to a 67-30 win over Ubly. Alena Sanson, Samantha Gierman and Kristen Greene staked their team to an early 20-10 lead.

Brown City, which had nine players break into the scoring column for the game, went on to build a 36-20 lead at the half and outscored the Lady Bearcats 17-3 in the third stanza to put the game out of reach. Greene and Jennifer McClelland combined to score nine of their team’s 17 points in the third period while in the fourth quarter, Tiffany Cross and Allysa Ambu teamed up to net 10 of Brown City’s 14 points to seal the win.

Three players scored in double figures for Brown City, led by Greene’s 12 points to go along with her 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Sanson and Gierman tossed in 10 each, Ambu had eight and McClelland had seven.

Brown City, now 13-1 overall, travels to Deckerville Tuesday and entertains Harbor Beach on Thursday.

MARLETTE

In Greater Thumb Conference-East competition, the Lady Red Raiders hosted Mayville last Thursday, winning 68-55. Marlette established an early advantage in this one then just kept on building, taking leads of 21-13 and 37-21 at the end of the first and second quarters. After the break things didn’t get any better for the Lady Wildcats, either, getting outscored 14-14 and 20-18 in quarters three and four.

Despite the outcome, Mayville still had several players shine against the otherwise cloudy background, including Chelsea Rohl, who clocked herself a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tessa Buhl was also in the mix for the Lady Wildcats, scoring 12.

A rough fourth quarter that featured just four points by the Lady Red Raiders sent Marlette to a 42-33 GTC-East loss to Harbor Beach Thursday. Marlette trailed by three points at the end of the first quarter, 11-8, and were only down 21-10 at the intermission. However, after working to tie the game at 29-all after three quarters, the 13-4 scoring disadvantage in the fourth was more than the Lady Red Raiders could overcome.

Senior Amara Wilson led Marlette with 12 points and six rebounds, Jernna Hirsch had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Angela Odoerfer scored four points. Keagan Wilson grabbed 11 of Marlette’s 39 rebounds. The Lady Red Raiders went just 5- of-15 from the free throw line.

Marlette is 5-6 overall, 2-4 GTC-East. Tomorrow the Lady Red Raiders host Sandusky before traveling to Ubly Thursday and Deckerville Feb. 9.

Mayville is 6-7, 2-4 GTCEast. The Lady Wildcats host Vassar today before playing at Sandusky Thursday and Brown City Feb. 9.
