If St. Louis doesn’t top Boston, I’ll be blue

Fat Guy Corner

The Stanley Cup will take a full seven games to decide whose names will be engraved on the Cup! The Boston Bruins went into St. Louis on Sunday night and came away with a solid road win. In 2011, the Bruins were also down 3-2 in and came back to win two straight hockey games and win Lord Stanley’s cup.

I predicted the Blues in a grueling seven-game series and at least got half the prediction right! Do I have the right hockey team? I believe the Bruins have the advantage being at home. Yet, game sevens are only one crazy puck bounce away from a crazy finish. I will stick with my Blues prediction, but I am not very confident; I will admit that. I just want to see a tied game in the third period, or overtime to decide this Stanley Cup winner. It has been a fun watch between the Blues and Bruins and the loser will suffer all summer long. Oh, what am I to do when hockey season ends? I will miss it until October, as I enjoy my NHL hockey, and especially the NHL playoffs.

Prayers for Big Papi

The city of Boston’s and baseball hero, David Ortiz, was shot in the Dominican Republic. He was shot in the back and underwent emergency surgery Sunday. The man they call Big Papi is in stable condition and hopefully recovers from his injuries. I have always loved Big Papi as a baseball player and his infectious attitude on life. I have not forgiven him for his grand slam against the Tigers in the playoffs, though. Heal up, David Ortiz, and good luck in your recovery.

Wolverines snap College World Series drought

The Michigan Wolverines are headed to the college World Series for the first time since 1984. Talk about snapping a long drought! The Michigan baseball team defeated the No. 1-ranked UCLA Bruins to advance. The Bruins had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, yet Michigan pitcher, Ben Keizer, slammed the door shut on UCLA. The college World Series takes place June 15-26. Good Luck to the Wolverines and the Big Ten Conference.

Swing and a miss on the track

The Belmont Stakes winner Saturday was Sir Winston. My pick of War of Will was a total swing and a miss. The winner paid a nice price at 10-1 odds after he held off the betting favorite of Tacitus. The fact Sir Winston didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby, or Preakness, goes to show you a fresh horse is maybe the way to go in the Belmont Stakes. The only horse to run all three legs of the Triple Crown was War of Will this year. The trainer Mark Casse had two of the Triple Crown winners this racing season. He won the Belmont and the Preakness, which is pretty special.

Two swings and a miss…

It’s Monday night and tip off for the NBA Finals is in two hours. The Toronto Raptors have a chance to win the franchise’s first-ever NBA Championship. The Fat Guy prediction of the Raptors losing two games out in Golden State were great predictions, were they not? Shoot! I mean, wholly smokes was I way off with those predictions! I cannot believe Toronto is man handling this Warriors’ basketball team with ease. I realize the Warriors are hurt and a tired basketball team. Think about this: five-straight seasons in the NBA Finals! Do you realize how much extra basketball that is for a team to play? Let’s be honest. If Kevin Durant was healthy, the Warriors destroy everyone and win the title in 2019. However, injuries are part of sports and the next-man-up theory always applies. Go Raptors! End this thing (Monday night)!

Third time is the charm?

The PGA Tour U.S Open will begin this week at Pebble Beach. The defending champion is Brooks Koepka, who will be looking for his third-straight U. S. Open title. The last time someone won it three straight times? How about 1903, 1904 and 1905 by way of Scotland’s Willie Anderson. I would say odds are against Mr. Koepka, wouldn’t you? I love the U.S. Open and cannot wait to watch it this weekend. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
