2nd half spree nets upset for Red Raiders

The Marlette Red Raiders have played several close games this winter, but came out on the short end of most.

That changed in a big way on Friday night when the Red Raiders upset Harbor Beach, 54-42, in GTC-East action. The loss was the first for the Pirates in East play, falling to 4-1 (6-5 overall). Meanwhile, the Raiders improved to 2-4 (4-9).

The big difference came in the second half. Harbor Beach led, 26-21, at the break, but Marlette stung the Pirates with a 16-3 run and a 37-29 lead in the third quarter. The Raiders fended off any Pirate comeback attempt in the final eight minutes.

A big part of Marlette’s win came from senior Alex Heussner’s career-high 26 points, plus seven rebounds.

“It was a really nice road win,” said Chris Storm, Red Raiders head coach. “Heussner made some shots early that helped his confidence and his teammates looked for him all night. Defensively, everyone played well and that was the difference in sealing the victory.”

The Red Raiders also had 14 points and five assists from guard Sean Quade and nine points and six boards from forward Peyton Dale.

In a tight battle throughout, the Red Raiders came up short against Ubly in overtime on Tuesday night, losing 51-47.

Marlette trailed by one, 22-21, at halftime and later forced OT.

Quade led the Red Raiders in scoring with 15 points and also had four steals. Dillen Cook was next in the scoring column with 12 and Dale added nine. Heussner chipped in with seven rebounds.
