Pirates 3-0 in NCTL Stripes

PECK — The Peck Pirates jumped out to an early lead last Tuesday night and cruised the rest of the way in North Central Thumb League – Stripes play.

The Pirates took a 10-0 advantage in those first eight minutes and then went on to post a 41-23 victory over the Owen- Gage Bulldogs. The win left the Pirates at 3-0 in the division and at 4-4 on the season.

Kyle Vincent led the Peck offense with 10 points. He was followed by Brandon Winiarski with nine and Trevor VanConant with eight.

After a non-league contest against New Haven Merritt Academy this past Friday, the Pirates will travel to Bay City All Saints tonight (Monday) for a Stripes division battle. — D.B.

NORTH BRANCH

The Broncos fell just short against Blue Water Area Conference rival Richmond, losing the battle 47-40 Friday.

Richmond held the slim three-point lead, 13-10, after the first quarter and increased that to five, 26-21 by halftime. North Branch trimmed the lead to just one, 30-29, still in favor of Richmond after the third stanza. Richmond was able to keep North Branch at arm’s length in the fourth.

“We played the best defense all year, we just couldn’t make a basket,” said North Branch coach Mike Snoblen. “We shot 23 percent from the field tonight.”

Riley Bugg led the Broncos with 20 pts and 17 rebounds and Gerrid Rutledge had 16 points. Drake Deshetsky had two points and was huge on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds.

North Branch, 5-4 overall, 1-3 BWAC, was at Armada yesterday after we went to press and hosts Algonac Friday. — L.P.

MARLETTE

The offense of guard Sean Quade and good, overall defensive effort led the Marlette Red Raiders to their first GTC East win of the season on Wednesday night.

Now 1-2 in the division and 3-7 overall, the Raiders stopped the Memphis Yellowjackets (0-3, 6-5), 40-34.

Senior guard Sean Quade provided most of the offense for Marlette with a game-high 20 points, 4-for-6 from the three-point line. He also had three steals on the night.

Sophomore Dillen Cook was next in scoring with eight points.

The Raiders take on two Sanilac County rivals in East play this week. They host Sandusky tonight (Wednesday) and travel to Brown City this Friday evening. — D.B.
