The Lady Green Devils, 17-17 overall, earned their second Division 3 district championship in the last three years by taking the title at LakeVille on Saturday.

After holding off LakeVille, 7-5, in the semifinals, Brown City crushed Burton Bentley, 15-0, in a three-inning mercy game in the title clash.

“I’m so excited for the girls,” said veteran Brown City coach Jeff Pitts. “It has been a crazy year with so many injuries. We have been playing well the last couple of weeks but didn’t have a whole lot of wins to show for it.

“We beat two tough teams – Burton Bendle and LakeVille, to get to the finals.” He then added, “I am so proud of the girls for staying together through everything. The young mistakes we were making early in the season, we aren’t making any more.”

In the very quick and efficient title game against Bentley, Zoe Matthews and Lauren Woods each had two hits and two RBI and Belle Hiles drove in a pair of runs.

Woods pitched the three innings, giving up no runs and striking out four.

The bats were booming against LakeVille in the semis. Matthews was 3-for- 4 with two RBI and Alexis Wiltsie added three hits, including two doubles and scored a pair of runs. Erika Troia, meanwhile, had two doubles and two RBI and Hiles drove in a pair of runs.

Woods pitched in that game, also, striking out seven.

Brown City will host the regional this Saturday. After the first semifinal at 10 a.m. with Sandusky and Madison Heights-Bishop Foley, the Lady Devils take on New Haven at the Noon semifinal. The winners then meet in the title game at approximately 2 p.m. — D.B.
