Fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade teams came to Brown City from Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Deckerville, Sandusky, Marlette and Peck schools for the showdown.

Brown City’s fourthgrade team took first place, and the fifth and sixthgrade teams took second place in their divisions.

Principal Sean Hagey explained the competition, saying, “In December students are selected by their schools to compete, and are assigned books to read. Then in March they come to the contest and are asked questions about the books in a format similar to quiz bowl.

Finishing second among fifth-grade teams were the following Brown City students: front row, left to right, Ashley Bender, Winter Muxlow and Logan Rocket; back row, from left, Binkley-Potts, Quinn Ostrander, Lia Schemanske and Charlie Childers. They did an outstanding job reading and practicing prior to the competition. It was great to see all three grade levels make the finals.”

Hagey acknowledged the many volunteers, who under the guidance of teacher Sharron Takacs, made this year’s event successful.

Hagey also thanked Nick Miu from the Sanilac Intermediate School District for his work in organizing the inter-district reading comprehension competition.
