Alliance opens new year with win over Fenton/Linden

Photo by Brandon Pope HARTLAND — The Alliance hockey team (LakeVille, Almont, Goodrich, Imlay City, North Branch) was back in action on Wednesday after nearly two weeks off, taking an 8-5 win over league opponent Fenton/Linden.

The Alliance took a 4-0 lead in the opening period. Jacob Young opened the scoring effort within the first minute of the game, assisted by Thomas Manko. Hunter Ratliff then added the second goal off a helper from Kurtis Winget. Zak Hanaford then set up Young for his second goal before Hanaford added one to close out the first.

Fenton/Linden opened the second period with three unanswered goals to cut the Alliance’s lead to one. Young completed his hat trick on an unassisted goal to close out the second with a 5-3 Alliance lead.

In the final period, Johnny Labombard rippled the mesh at 10:12 in the third, assisted by Dakota Lehman. The Griffins answered with one of their own, but the Alliance added another pair of goals to extend its lead to 8-4. Manko hit the net first, assisted by Hanaford and Winget, followed by Lehman, with helpers from Jacob Krutz and Labombard. Fenton/Linden added the final goal of the game at 5:35.

The Alliance, 4-1 league, 8-4 overall, travels to Ostego County Sportsplex to face Gaylord in back-to-back games on Jan. 12 and 13. — K.R.
