MAPLE VALLEY TWP. — Fire departments from Brown City, Marlette, Speaker Township and Elk Township were called out to fight a barn fire in the 3300 block of Wilcox Road Labor Day evening.

According to Brown City Fire Chief Keith Redlin, the call came in at about 5:45 p.m. that a barn full of straw had gone up in flames.

Redlin said it was a steel-walled structure with a steel roof, built on a concrete block foundation.

“By the time we got there,” said Redlin, “the barn roof had fallen in. The building was a total loss. Unfortunately, seven cows were lost along with a whole lot of straw.”

The blaze occurred on the property of Wilma Kreiner, according to officials.

Redlin said the cause of the fire appeared to be a lightning strike, and that damage to a nearby home’s electrical system seemed to support that conclusion.
