Peck Schools approve 2017-2018 calendar

PECK — The Peck Board of Education approved the district’s 2017- 18 school calendar at its July 8 meeting.

The new school year will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 5 with Christmas break scheduled for Friday, Dec. 22 through Tuesday, Jan. 6 and spring break set for Saturday, March 31 through Sunday, April 8.

Students next year will get out of school on Friday, June 8.

In other business:

• Board member Roy Hickman was absent.

• Paula Davidson and Karen Bloomfield were awarded the Outstanding Staff Pirate Award.

• The board awarded the fuel bid to Marlette Oil and Gas at 10 cents over rack rate.

• The district’s School Improvement team will meet in October.

• A budget hearing on the 2017-18 budget will be held June 29.

• A board workshop is scheduled for July 15 from 8:30-11 a.m.

• Principal Bill Kerr’s report included: math curriculum; growth looks good; Field Day went well; walking program awards were June 9; summer reading program; and high school staffing changes.

• Technology Director Luke Engler noted that the video at both the high school and kindergarten graduations went well. He also visited Kingston and Brown City schools to see their technology.

• Board member Pete Bullis provided a handout of summer maintenance items.

• The athletics report by Paula Davidson included: boys track, softball and junior high track were all NCTL Champs; Abbey Shell broke the school record for strikeouts in a season of 105; and Kody LaFleur broke the stolen base record.

• The appointments of assistant varsity football coaches Jerrod Burgess and Jeremy Abrego and volunteer coach Dan Bostick were approved.

• Board members adopted the MHSAA membership resolution as presented.

• The next board meeting will be held July 13 at 6 p.m.
