Staff Writer

ELK TWP. — John Maedel, a 65-year-old township resident, died June 13 after being trapped under his riding lawnmower.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Dept. said the fatal rollover occurred on June 13 around 2:30 p.m. when Sanilac Central Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a man who was trapped under a lawnmower on Farr Road, south of Marlette Road.

According to Sgt. Shelly Park, the initial investigation revealed that Maedel had been mowing the eastside ditch on Farr Road when the 2011 John Deere zero-turn lawnmower he was driving overturned, causing the lawn mower to land on top of him.

Upon arrival, it was determined that Maedel was deceased. Sanilac EMS responded to the scene to assess injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and it remains under investigation.

Sheriff deputies also were assisted on scene by the Sandusky Fire Dept.
