BROWN CITY — Firefighters responded to a blaze reported about 9:20 p.m., April 8 at a large dairy barn at 6045 N. Cade Road near Stiles Road.

According to Brown City Fire Chief Keith Redlin, firemen arrived to find 50 percent of the approximate 50 by 150-foot barn engulfed in flames.

“The guys worked really well together,” said Redlin, “and we were able to contain the fire right there. It was a good knock down. A good stop.”

Redlin said, “As we pulled in we had to watch out for the cows which were running around all over the place.”

Despite firefighters’ best efforts, Redlin said six cows died as a result of the blaze. Redlin acknowledged the Brown City Ladies Auxiliary for bringing much appreciated bottles of drinking water out to firemen battling the fire. “We have some real great wives,” he said.

“Though the cause of the fire remains undetermined,” said Redlin. “There is nothing suspicious about it.”

Brown City Fire was assisted in fighting the conflagration by Marlette Fire and also by a tanker assist from North Branch Fire.
