Sheriff warns of solicitors

MELVIN — The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Dept. has issued a warning about fraudulent door-to-door solicitors last seen in the Melvin area.

The sheriff’s department has received numerous complaints from people in reference to a company called JUST ENERGY going door to door soliciting to lower their SEMCO gas bill.

Once the homeowner gives the representatives their account number, they switch them over to their company without their permission and raise the gas prices.

According to SEMCO, it costs $300 to switch the customer back. SEMCO further advised there is nothing it can do once JUST ENERGY calls with the proper name and account number.

Citizens are being asked to look out for a blue 2004 Chevrolet station wagon occupied by up to five representatives of different races wearing JUST ENERGY uniforms and matching ball caps.

The sheriff’s department warned the public to be careful and not give out personal information if they feel it is unsafe. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 810-648-2000.
