Hirsch, a 2013 Marlette grad and All-State player, moved into a starting role at the point guard position for Youngstown because of an injury to another player. Hirsch became a clutch player at the position for the Penguins. She started 21 games and averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds after making her first start on Dec. 13. She ranked second among Horizon League freshmen in assists and minutes played per game, and she was fourth among the league’s freshmen in points and rebounds. Her 90 assists tied for the fifth most by an Youngstown State freshman, and her 35 three-pointers rank third.

“I’m very proud of Jenna for coming in as a true freshman and taking over the reins of the offense as the point guard,” coach John Barnes said. “To lead us to a third-place finish in the Horizon League is outstanding.”

The Penguins finished the regular season 14-15 overall but were 10-6 in the Horizon and finished tied for third place. — D.B.
