Photo by Michael Selecky LAPEER — The Polar Palace has been kind to the Alliance (LakeVille/North Branch/Dryden/Goodrich) varsity hockey team this season, and last Saturday’s 12-1 home victory in two periods over the Grand Rapids Flames was no exception.

Grand Rapids just barely endured the first period and was down, 8-1, after Adam Green launched an offensive onslaught for the Alliance at 11:20 on the Zach Giegler assist. Travis Gilmer scored 18 seconds later with help from Austin Hendrickson, who made it a 3-0 game for the Alliance at 8:17 on Gilmer assist.

The next goal came a mere seven seconds after that by way of Gilmer on a pass from Austin Hendrickson and was followed by the Flames’ only score at 8:01 unassisted by forward Quentin Gerke.

Now up 4-1, the Alliance continued to pull away with goals by Tim Ratliff on the Charlie Ferreri assist at 7:25, Gilmer completed his hat trick at 4:43 unassisted and Mitchell Wildey connected at 2:23 with help from Green. Logan Hendrickson did try and help the Alliance get a one-period mercy win by making it a seven-goal game at 1:23 on the Gilmer pass, but the squad didn’t score again until 16:33 of the second when Donovan Dumoulin hit nothing but net off an Eric Heildebrand assist.

It was at 9:53 of the second that the Alliance went up 10-1 off the stick of Mitchell Bushnell with help from Gavin Farmer, only to see Logan Hendrickson’s goal on the pass from Austin Hendrickson at 4:18 set up Austin Hendrickson for the final score unassisted with just under three minutes left in regulation. The only penalty of the contest was a two-minute slashing call on Grand Rapids defenseman Trevor Spangler and freshman goalie Nick Sesock started for the Alliance.

The Alliance, 7-2-1 overall, traveled to Iceland Arenas in Genesee County for the rematch against Flushing/Carman-Ainsworth on Saturday.
