— Local residents with a taste for authentic Mexican food will now find it close to home.

La Fonda Mexican Kitchen is opening its doors to customers today at its newest location, 4254 Main St.

Restaurant owner Salvador Martinez said he’s been operating the La Fonda Mexican Kitchen in Pontiac for the past three years.

He said the community’s size appealed to him when making a decision to open a second restaurant.

“It’s a small town and I’m hoping to bring something different,” Martinez said. “I have real, real authentic Mexican food. I love my food and make everything from scratch. I think people will be very happy.”

He said the restaurant will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and feature a variety of Mexican delicacies including six different types of tacos, three kinds of soups and even breakfast dishes such as huevos rancheros.

Martinez, 41, lived near Guadalajara, Mexico, before moving in 1988 to the United States where he raised his family. He said he’s been working in a restaurant since he was just 14 years old.

He and his wife, Maria, both do the cooking and anything else that needs to be done.

“She runs around like me,” he joked. “No different.”
